The Reason I am Optimistic

And why you should be too.

It really doesn’t matter when you read this. But if you’re reading it now, just on this side of 2022, you know that the year behind us has been abysmal. And the year before that was pretty bad too. Threatening weather, threats to our democracy, threat to our health and the very real sense that our world is crumbling.

These are the thoughts that have been driven by the sensations that our sensorium has gathered. There is a reason I am expressing this in such a particular way. Just as there is no action without intent, there is no thought without origin. And the origin of many of the thoughts we have been having have been driven by the relative bleakness of the sensations we have been capturing.

To put it bluntly, the data we are seeing creates a picture that’s far from pretty. But data is not the whole story, nor is the picture we create from it the entire tableau of the reality that is out there, in front of us. Instead, we and our friends, act like editors who select the juiciest pieces to post because they will have the greatest impact.

To understand why this is happening we need to grasp how we are put together. We’re a collective made of some 30 trillion cells that are mirrored by a largely equal number of microbes that is wired together by approximately 60km of nerves in…
